A precíz eljárás kb úgy néz ki, hogy a függvény variációját alakban vesszük fel, ahol az függvényről feltesszük, hogy folytonos, és deriváltjaival együtt korlátos. Ezután szerint sorbafejtünk, és elsőrendnél megállunk.

Persze a sorbafejtés folytatható. A következő rend dönti el, hogy az Euler-Lagrange egyenlet megoldása a funkcionálnak csak stacionárius pontját, vagy valódi szélsőértékét szolgáltatja. Lásd a tavalyi Ortvay-verseny egyik feladatát.
