A bombák tényleges felépítése rendszerint tartalmaz egy felfegyverző-kapcsolót, illetve egy tüzelő-kapcsolót. A bomba áramkörének az elkészítése mindig nyitott felfegyverző kapcsoló mellett történik. A bomba elhelyezése vagy elküldése előtt ezt zárják.

A fikciókban a bombák hatástalanítása azon múlik, hogy bizonyos vezetékeket megfelelő sorrendben vágnak el. Ezeknek legtöbbször különböző színe van, és egy asszisztens közli a sorrendet a bombát hatástalanító "vágó" személlyel.
Impliciten vagy expliciten utalnak rá, hogy a nem megfelelő sorrend esetén a bomba azonnal felrobban.
Mivel azonban az ilyen módon keltett feszültség, illetve ennek kombinálása a "versenyfutás az idővel" toposszal sem elegendő a néző érdeklődésének fenntartására, sokszor használják a toposz valamely szubverzióját.
Néhány példa:
1) Minden vezeték azonos színű.
2) A "vágó" színvak, vagy sötétben kell dolgoznia.
3) A "vágó" nem ismeri az adott színt, pl: okker, türkiz, sáfrány, umbra...stb.
4) Az asszisztens olvassa az utasításokat: "Azt írja, hogy vágd el a kék vezetéket.." [nyissz] "..a vörös után."
5) A "vágó" kidobja a bombát az ablakon.
6) A rossz vezeték elvágása gyorsítja a belső óra ütemét.
7) Nincsenek vezetékek.
8) Bármely vezeték elvágása robbanást okoz.
Soha semmilyen, elfogadható indoklást nem kap a befogadó arról, hogy házi készítésű bombákat miért készítenének valamilyen vezetékszínezési szabvány szerint. A 6)-os példa pedig jóval egzotikusabb áramkört feltételez, mint amilyenre a gyakorlatban példa van.

Egyébként a második világháborúban a Luftwaffe használt hasonló bombákat, ezek nem robbantak fel becsapódáskor, ehelyett a bombázott területet kiürítésre kényszerítette, vagy legalábbis megbénította.

Pluszkérdés: Meg lehet-e építeni ezt az eszközt anélkül, hogy meghalnánk?
Tervezzük át úgy, hogy meg is lehessen csinálni! :)
