Stephen Hawking brit professzor, a világ leghíresebb elméleti fizikusa egy új írásában arról spekulál, hogy talán mégsem kéne olyan nagyon kutatni a 2012-ben megtalált isteni részecskét, a Higgs-bozont, mert az elpusztíthatja a világot.

Hawking szerint extrém teszteléskor, nagyon magas energiaszinten az isteni részecske (ami az anyagnak (formát és méretet) inkább tömeget ad) olyan katasztrofális vákuumot hozhat létre, hogy egy pillanat alatt összeomolhat a tér és az idő, és mi észre se vennénk, hogy megszűnt a világ. A fizikus szerint a Higgs-bozon azért félelmetes, mert instabillá válhat 100 milliárd GeV fölött, és a vákuumbuborék, ami létrejöhetne, fénysebességgel tágulhatna.

Tudósok szerint viszont ez nem igazán valószínű, hiszen nincs is akkora részecskegyorsító, ami ekkora energiát tudna előállítani. Ehhez akkora gép kéne, ami nagyobb mint a Föld, tehát a közeljövőben nem kell tartani egy ilyesféle világvégétől. A genfi Nagy Hadronütköztető a veszélyes energiamennyiség töredékét képes csak előállítani. (Ahogy a kínai részecskegyorsító sem lesz ilyen értelemben veszélyes.)

A Higg-részecskét egy brit tudós, Peter Higgs már a hatvanas években megsejtette, de csak két éve találták meg. (444)
